Piper grew up in Altadena, California and felt an affinity with animals from birth. Her family dog was an abused rescue that was her childhood best friend. Soon, she was picking up stray dogs off the street, and any other animals that needed to be nursed back to health.
Piper attended USC, where she studied Psychology. She went on to earn a Masters Degree in Autism/Applied Behavioral Analysis, as well as a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice. She was a behavioral therapist for children and adults with Autism, and later became a Police Officer for the city of Glendale. She also earned her Culinary Arts degree and ran her private chef and catering business for several years. But animals have always been where her heart is. Hand in Paw is Piper's lifelong dream, and she is so honored to run such a wonderful organization.
Piper is also an animal activist and vegan advocate, fighting for all animals.
Piper lives in Monrovia, California with all her rescue babies. She is also the CEO of the dog collar company, Givebones.
Hello, My name is Ashley, and I am 12 years old. I am in the 7th grade. I have been an active Hand in Paw volunteer for 2 years, and a close friend to Piper Wood. I am also an active foster (I currently have 3 HIP babies). Some of my interests include swimming, photography, hanging out with my friends, playing with my dogs, and of course, rescuing and volunteering for HIP. I also enjoy writing songs for Hand in Paw. When I grow up, I would like to see myself as a veterinarian. I have a huge passion for animals. I currently have 3 dogs, 1 cat, 1 bunny, 1 turtle, 2 foster dogs, and a foster cat! I ALWAYS want to bring home more! I always try to save animals, whether I am walking around the park, in the car, or hanging out with my friends. Even though the shelter is a depressing place, I like to picture what the dogs will look like in the future, in loving and warm arms. Each freedom ride is so rewarding to the dogs and to me. Rescuing is my passion, and as a vegetarian, I will continue to be the voice of the unwanted, neglected, and abused animals!

I'm Elaine, and I go to Westridge School! I love helping animals in my free time, especially with Piper. I'm also a volleyball and oboe player, and sometimes I dabble in photography. I have one pug mix pomeranian named Puggy, but it's like I have 20 with all the HIP dogs. I hope to see myself studying medicine in the future, but I'll always have a soft spot for animals, especially dogs like the ones Piper rescues. I'm so glad to be a part of Hand in Paw and couldn't be more grateful for the time I spend with them.
My name is Caroline and I'm 14 years old. I love to draw and play the piano, but I absolutely love animals. Animals have always had a huge part of my heart, and I always want to own every dog that passes by me. Volunteering with HIP is one of the best things I have ever done in my life. It has opened me up to a new view of rescuing dogs and how bad some are treated. It is my job to help those dogs feel loved and find them a new home. I also love to foster dogs that are waiting to be adopted and go to their forever homes. I currently only have one dog, but I hope to have more in the future!
My name is Vanessa, and I am 13 years old. In my spare time, I love to help and care for all types of animals. My goal in life is to be a veterinarian and open my own rescue and clinic. I am grateful to volunteer with the most awesome and inspiring person, Piper! I would love to learn more about how I can care for and help animals. I adopted 3 dogs, all, of course, rescues from the one and only, Piper! I also have 1 fish and 1 turtle!
